I sympathize, but as someone who has made this mistake infinitely many times in the past, continues to do so now, and probably will be unable to avoid doing so in the future I dont believe that trying to define what ultimate recognition is, under ANY circumstances, the right attitude. An example. In High School, I was the captain of my robotics team. I joined the team as a freshman because my eighth grade science teacher encouraged me to. I was very ambitious: I wanted to become team captain, I wanted to lead us from success to success, I wanted to help us bring in money from sponsors, and win the most prestigious awards that FIRST offers its teams. I worked my butt off, and the first part of my dream came true I became captain my junior year. I wrote essays for our awards applications, was on the drive team at the regionals. Well! you say. My robotics team is kicking butt now. They won the entrepreneurship award last year. They built a spectacular robot, and made it to the semifinals for the first time in our teams history. And I realize, only now, when Im no longer on the team, that all my hard work was part of a picture bigger than myself: the payoff wasnt on as short of a time scale as I had expected, or hoped. In High School, I (and all of my friends here at MIT) were academic rockstars; we got straight As, we were valedictorians, we won lots of awards, etc. I came to expect that hard work paid off in a specific way. Then I got here,  stopped getting straight As, stopped winning awards, stopped being top of my class, and woah.  The foundation of my self-confidence basically disappeared. That happens to a lot of people: we have to rebuild our self-confidence out of tougher stuff than grades or class rank, because we are not longer the smart kid or the nerdy kid because EVERYONE here is smart and nerdy. And thats a really good thing, I think. A final story. And the reason why I was thinking about all this. I just did poorly on my Quantum II final. I also did poorly on the midterm, way back in October, and it was important to me for a lot of reasons that I ace this test. Did I study hard? Yes. Did I do every problem they suggested we do in preparation? Yes. Did I do all the homework? Yes. Did I attend all office hours I could possibly attend? Yes. I even crutched to office hours in the rain, once.  Was there anything more I could have done? Probably, but there always is you can always look back and say I SHOULD HAVE DONE MORE! but thats just cruel. I think its unreasonable and a little unhealthy to expect 100% efficiency out of yourself. So, what was the point of all the work I put into that class this semester? WHY did I crutch to office hours in the rain? I did it for a specific result: I wanted an A in that class. I would have liked recognition of all the work I put into it. And now Im probably not going to get that. And last night, it was a huge crisis and the end of the world and MY FUTURE IS RUINED and THIS IS THE UNIVERSE TELLING ME NOT TO BE A PHYSICIST and WHY DO I EVER TRY EVER WHEN IM NOT EVEN GOING TO GET EXTERNAL VALIDATION OF MY HARD WORK. And then I talked to two French House alums, both of whom had their serious academic struggles here and are doing just fine. They both told me that whatever grade I get in this class: its really not going to matter when I look back in a couple of years. Another of my friends here told me something similar: its going to be fine, it will work out, blah blah blah, all the things that are totally impossible for me to realize at this stage because I am so freaking short-si ghted. At this point, though, this kind of disappointment feels familiar. It feels like looking up at the scoreboard and seeing that our Robotics team lost. It feels like listening for my name at an awards ceremony and not hearing it called. It feels like how Im sure my friend felt when that letter from Hogwarts brought unwelcome and unexpected news. I worked hard for a specific kind of validation and reward, and I didnt get it. But I have things to look forward to. Next  semester I will take Quantum III, which is sort of the capstone of this quantum series, filled with awesome applications of all the crazy math techniques weve been learning. I KNOW I learned a lot in Quantum II, even if it wont show up that way on my transcript. But it will make Quantum III awesome, and lets be real how many people can go around saying they know advanced quantum physics? Whatever I become a teacher, a researcher I will be glad I took this class, and I will be glad I worked hard, and it will pay off. The grade is not the ultimate recognition of that. I didnt work the entire semester for one grade. I worked the entire semester for what will follow after this semester, the same way that high school seniors have worked for 17 or 18 years for what will follow those 17 or 18 years; Acceptance To Dream College is just another thing that happens (or doesnt) along the way, and honestly will not turn out to make that big of a diff erence in the long run. On December 22, I fly back home to London for the first time in a YEAR. My mom is wonderful and familiar with my love of theatre, and bought tickets to Richard III, Kiss Me Kate, and Cabaret. She is also familiar with my love of food, and arranged an outing for posh afternoon tea. My friend Davie, who graduated last year, is currently taking a year to study math in Berlin, and is going to stay with my family for a few days right around New Years. Were going to take a tour of Hampton Court palace; way back in my youth, I had the free time to spend weekends roaming through the Hampton Court hedge maze, and eventually had the correct path memorized. Then itll be 2013, which is hard to believe. On January 3, I fly back to Boston for a few days, see the doctor to find out whether my toe is recovering properly, then fly to Los Angeles on January 6th for the American Astronomical Societys annual winter conference. Ill present a poster on my pulsar research from the summer, and do my best to charm the other astronomers. Ill visit friends in San Francisco, fly back to Boston, do research for a couple of weeks, then fly to China to teach for five days. When disappointment catches up with me and Im no longer able to maintain perspective about how much one particular incident will matter to my life in the long run, I like to concentrate on all the things Im excited about. I know that all this is easy for me to say, because IM AT MIT! and MY LIFE MUST BE AWESOME! and WHAT MORE IS THERE TO LIFE THAN GETTING INTO MIT? but let me tell you, we all suffer our fair share of disappointments and failures; do yourself a favor, and learn how to move on from those experiences without beating yourself up. That will serve you much more faithfully in the long run than a particular college acceptance. I know a few very tightly-strung, low-self-confidence MIT students, who sadly havent learned yet how to mentally forgive themselves for what they consider failure, and havent yet managed to detach self-worth from the various forms of external validation theyve become accustomed to. Also, as a last, semi-unrelated note;  Ive gotten a few e-mails recently from prospectives saying thank you for posting so often! which makes me a little guilty. I dont want to give the illusion that, against my will, I drag myself to the blogging interface and bang posts out in an act of self-sacrifice for all the loyal readers. Yes,  this is a job, and I respect it as such but its also an outlet, and this might sound selfish but I think that I post as much for myself as I do for the prospectives. When Im stressed out, its relaxing to come here and tell a story so, really, I should thank you for reading. Blogging is also an excellent form of procrastination. So excuse me while I go study for my 18.06 (Linear Algebra) final.

We meet Jane while shes living with her horrible aunt Ms. Reed along with her equally horrible cousins Georgiana, Eliza and the worst of them all John. Its seen right away that Jane loves to read and is trying to do so before being attacked by John. She fights back and is immediately reprimanded by Ms. Reed and her kind but stern maid Bessie. Mrs. Reed decided the best way to punish Jane is to throw her in the red room. Before entering it is revealed by bessie the reason for her living at their house. Janes an orphan and Ms. Reed is upholding her late husbands dying wish by her being there. She resists entering the room and screams out trying to escape (something it seems she never does). The screaming continues on into the night until she drifts off to sleep and is awoken in her own bed and sees a physician there with her. He then leaves and suggests to Bessie that he come back. Bessie informs her that she has fallen sick with crying and she better rest. Jane is very confused and upset but tries to sleep anyway. The next morning shes visited by Mr. Lloyd. He asks her many questions and answers honestly, often protesting how miserable she is. After their discussion Mr. Lloyd asks if she would like to go to school. And Jane answe rs yes. Not long after Jane has a meeting with Ms. Reed and Mr. Brocklehurst, the headmaster at the school Ms. Reed is trying to get her into. He asks her many questions mostly on whether Jane is a good child. Then, Ms. Reed does the most despicable thing and tells Mr. Brocklehurst that she has the tendency to lie, when in reality Jane has always made a point to be honest. This labels Jane as deceitful and it creates many troubles for her at Lowood. When Jane gets to lowood it takes a long time to get used to the structured routine, bad food, and cold temperatures. While she dislikes it, she finds it better than John Reeds blows. We are soon introduced to a few new faces. We first meet Ms. Temple when she allows the students a second meal after their first was burned. Its the first we see of her kindness to come. Jane then meets Helen Burns because of Janes interest in her book. It is discovered that Helen is very intelligent, but messy and it often gets her in trouble. Mr. Brocklehurst visits Lowood and addresses the entirety of the school, making sure all his rules are being upheld. He takes this time to preach a little too and discusses the hellfire that comes to little girls who dont obey and even forces girls to cut their hair for growing it to prettily. Jane accidentally calls attention to herself by dropping her slate, effectively breaking it. Mr. Brocklehurst see this and calls her onto a stool in front of everyone. He t hen warns everyone of her being a castaway, lier, interloper, alien and tells everyone to ignore and hate her. All because of Ms. Reeds lie. She was then condemned to stand there for a half an hour not to be approached by anyone. After her public punishment she was visited an comforted by Helen and they became good friends, eating and studying together all the time. Helen was full of kindness and patience and it made Jane want to be like her. She saw what she could be in Helen and decided to work hard to be her best. Time went on at lowood and when winter came many girls began getting sick. Including Helen Burns. Jane is by her side in her last moments as Helen discusses her future with Jesus. Jane hold her as they both fall asleep and arent awoken till the morning when Ms. Temple find Jane and a passed Helen. Helen made a huge impact on Jane and is probably the reason jane becomes the kind and patient woman and governess she is. Life moves on and Jane rises in classes under the tutelage of Ms. Temple who acts as her friend and mentor throughout her time at Lowood. She spends her last year at lowood as a teacher and then decided she craves independence and to get out into the world and looks for a job elsewhere. So, the job at Thornfield was presented to her and her future was set. She first meets Mrs. Fairfax, the kind housekeeper at Thornfield manor. Jane is excited about her new job and feels comforted by the housekeepers kindness and her students cheerfulness. Although she feels uneasy about the prospect of meeting her master. On the way to deliver a letter she runs across a man who was thrown from his horse and needs to be helped. Seeing his distress she offered to help. It was very awkward when she helped him back onto his horse probably because of his kurt demeanor and unappreciative expression all the while being concerned with her wellbeing since she was traveling alone. She describes him as dark and foreboding but she felt no fear. She helps him on his way and she continues on hers. When she got back to Thornfield she was surprised to find her master had returned and sprained his ankle. What a coincidence. The next day she was called into Mr. Rochesters study along with her pupil Adele. She knew her traveler immediately by his grim face and demeanor and sat in the chair opposite him. He began the conversation about presents and a lot of banter continued. Their conversation was loaded in irony and double meaning (as Mr. Rochester compared her lengthily to a fairy) and were met with confusion by Ms. Fairfax. He judged her harshly on her talents in drawing and piano and was impressed by some and disappointed in others. She thought he was very strange indeed. (from here on I realized thats too much detail) Mr. Rochester talked with her a few more times regularly and often asked uncomfortable questions like Do you find me handsome? to which she replied No. Each time he talks with her he reveals more and more about himself. Its all very weird and deep and personal. Probably too personal for a governor and her master. She often went to bed thinking about him and their conversations, and it seems slowly starts to fall for him without her even knowing. At this point when shes thinking about her feelings she hears demonic noises coming from the walls. There is even a fire presumably made by the mystery person. And its after this that Mr. Rochesters feelings for Jane have been hinted at for the first time. But then he leaves for a long time and when he comes back he brings guests including the beautiful Blanche Ingram who hopes to marry Rochester for his money. She flirts very hard but Rochester goes between disinterest and flirting back regularly, maybe to make Jane jealous? Jane often is je alous of her beauty but finds her hauty, fake and only interested in him for his money. While everyone is there a strange gypsy comes to the door and offers to read the people. When Jane goes the gypsy asks very pointed questions about her feelings only for the reader to find out later that it was Mr. Rochester the whole time determined to figure out if she loved him. (I find this very creepy and NOT romantic but okay). An old friend of Mr. Rochesters arrives and he got very freightened because of it. That night Mason is stabbed by the mysterious person (who Jane thinks is Grace Poole) which opens a lot of questions for Jane. Soon after Jane is told that Mr. John Reed had died and she was invited to speak with Ms. Reed who seems to be on her deathbed. When she arrives she gets to see Bessie, the maid who showed her kindness as a child. They chit chat before Jane goes in to see Ms. Reed but it seems the sickness has gone to her head and nothing she says makes sense, but a lot is reve aled on why she hated Jane and why she was in her care in the first place. When Ms. Reed dies she heads home. She assumes Rochester will marry soon and struggles with the idea of leaving him, but knows it is what is best. She now is honest with herself and declares that she does in fact love him. While taking a walk one beautiful evening she runs across him but hopes to avoid him. He does not let her walk away unnoticed and pulls her in for a talk. He informs her of his plans to be married. Little does she know the bride is meant to be her. Through a lot of unnecessary tears and yelling they both confess their feelings and decide to marry. Alls bliss for a short while but on her wedding day she gets quite a shock. Mason shows up and confesses that hes the brother of ROCHESTERS WIFE! Thats right, hes married to THE CRAZY WOMAN IN THE ATTIC. Turns out he married her when they were young (not for love) and she went slowly insane so he shut her up in the attic. Jane, obviously shocked leaves Rochester and runs away to the country. She soon runs out of money and is wandering around all alone, sleeping outdoors until she comes across a small house and collapses on the doorstep and is rescued from her situation by St. John And his sisters. During her stay with these 3 siblings and their servant, Jane wrestles with her feelings and mourns her Rochester. She becomes friends with the sisters and tries to move on from her life at thornfield. She gets a job teaching and is slow to enjoy it but ends up connecting with her students all the while plagued with regrets of leaving Rochester. St. John randomly reveals that they are in fa ct cousins and their shared wealthy uncle died. Her cousin also tells her of their newfound money and his wish to go to india with her and marry Jane. But she doesnt love him. And theyre COUSINS so ew. Soon after Jane thinks she hears Rochester calling for her in the night and she cant deny her feelings any more. She goes to him and sees that the house has been burned down in a fire set by Rochesters insane wife effectively killing herself and blinding Rochester. The master was able to save all the servants and tried to save his wife but was unable to. Jane and Rochester get back together and continue to live a wonderful life as equals (because of her large sum of money) and he eventually gets his eyesight back.

6 Study Tips for Visual Learners

Visual Learning is one of the  three different learning styles  made famous by Neil D. Fleming in his VAK model of learning. He states that people who are visual learners need to  see  new information in order to truly learn it, hence the need for study tips for visual learners. Visual Learner Tips People who have this trait are often very spatially aware and respond to things like color, tone, brightness, contrast, and other visual info when they read, study, and learn. Some also have photographic memories in various degrees and can not only visualize information after reading it or seeing it but can recreate it. Most people utilize this learning method at least partly throughout their lives, especially since traditional school is geared toward those visual learners, but some people would classify themselves as predominantly visual learners where others would not.  If youre one of them,  you may find these things helpful when studying for a test, quiz, midterm, or final exam. Since sight is key, visual learners need materials in front of them to help get  the information fully committed to memory. Capitalize on this learning style with simple tips. Color Code Assign colors to common themes in your notes, textbook, and handouts. For instance, if youre studying vocabulary words for a test, highlight all of the nouns in yellow, all of the verbs in blue and all of the adjectives in pink. Youll associate that particular color with the part of speech, which will help you remember it on the test.   In a history textbook, highlight all the major actions of a particular general, for instance, in one color and all the consequences of his actions in another. When researching for an essay, color code the info you find by topic.   Your brain remembers color really well, so use it to your advantage! Organize Your Notes Because youre so visual, disorganized notes will be largely unsettling to you. Put all of your handouts in one place in your notebook or binder. Design clear, neat tabs or another type of system to keep things straight. Rewrite your notes. Use outlines to keep things succinct and clear. Not only will you be looking at the ideas from the lecture again, which capitalizes on your visual learning, but you can also add new information or edit as you move along. This will help you learn the material. Study the Graphics This is a fabulous study tip for those of you who can absorb new information with your eyes. Use the charts and graphics in your textbook for your chapter test  to your advantage. It is much easier to learn the periodic table of the elements on the chart than it is to learn a list of the elements. Bonus? Charts that are color-coded! Draw Pictures or Figures Even if you are not the most creative person, get out your pencil and draw pictures, figures, and diagrams to accompany the information you are trying to learn. Your brain will store a set of drawings of the five biggest cities in Canada in your head much longer than it will a list of those cities. Help yourself out when the textbook doesnt and create your own visuals. Watch Documentaries or Videos Dont be afraid to step outside of your classroom in order to glean knowledge about whatever it is you are studying as long as you use a reliable source and not some hack on YouTube. Getting a well-rounded, big picture of your topic can really expand your knowledge! And when you are this type of learner, it helps to secure that knowledge through media like documentaries or videos rather than just through textbooks.   Draw Concept Maps A concept map is a method of visually brainstorming, where you get all of the ideas from your head onto paper and draw connections where you see fit. Youll start with a central idea — weather, for example. That will go in the center of your sheet of paper. Then, from the weather, youll branch off into main categories. Add things like precipitation, climate, air, clouds, and so on. From each of those categories, youll branch off further. Clouds could be divided further down into cumulus, stratus, cirrus, and so on. Precipitation could be divided down into rain, sleet, snow, etc. If you look at the topic you are learning from this angle, its easy to spot gaps in your knowledge base. If, for instance, youre studying weather and you realize you have no idea how climate can affect weather or what to put under that category, perhaps you missed something in class.

In simple words, we want to become an expert of some sort. According to the Oxford Dictionary, an expert is a person who is very knowledgeable about or skillful in a particular area. In Shakespeare’s Play ‘Romeo and Juliet’, we get the impression that perhaps the nurse has more affection for Juliet compared to her actual parents. It was the nurse that raised and breastfed her. But this is not a significant confrontation just a petty dispute in which the mother recognises that conflict will always be a part of mother/daughter relationships. This can be seen in What has Happened to Lulu, where the confrontation between mother and daughter has escalated to the point where the daughter felt she must leave. Similarly, in the poem, A frosty Night, Alice is angry as her mother’s love is controlling and smothering. The texts suggest that relationships are not always healthy between parents and daughters. The structure of Romeo and Juliet takes the form of a traditional narrative with the developing problem of Juliet’s arranged marriage reaching a climax with her death then a resolution of the feuding families reconciling. In Catrin, the classical structure is abandoned: and replaced with a more complex narrative beginning with a flashback. It is the only at the end where we understand their conflict. In ‘A Frosty Night’ and ‘What has happened to Lulu? We see a more traditional structure with the story unfolding in a chronological way. However, what is interesting about the twentieth century texts is that none of them are resolved at the end unlike Romeo and Juliet. Shakespeare’s play is quite alike ‘A Frosty Night’ as the conflict is revealed through dialogue while in ‘Catrin’ and ‘What Has Happened to Lulu’ the narrative is conveyed through the first person. The social and historical contexts of the texts are marked differently. Romeo and Juliet was written in the late 16th century while the other poems were written in the modern day and, therefore, reflects the attitudes and values of their times. In Romeo and Juliet, unlike today, children weren’t expected to question the authority of their parents. Moreover, it was the tradition for parents to arrange their children’s marriage and sometimes leads to serious conflict. This is evident in Shakespeare’s play and ultimately leads to the death of both children. In all the poems, the conflict in a parent-child relationship isn’t as serious as in Romeo and Juliet. While Alice and Lulu felt restricted and constrained by their mothers they could at least have acted more assertive with their parents and even leave home as Lulu’s disappearance was. In Catrin, the conflict is of a trivial nature which would make occurrence in most families. Despite their apparent differences, what is remarkable is that parent/child conflict has persisted through time and therefore it is possible to understand the confrontation between Juliet and her parent’s even though it was written over four hundred years ago. In all the texts, powerful emotive language is illustrated. In ‘Romeo and Juliet’, we see Old Capulet verbally attacks Juliet in an aggressive and threatening manner, â€Å"Hang thee, Young Baggage! Disobedient Wretch! † he screams. While in ‘Catrin’, Clarke uses the powerful metaphor â€Å"tight red rope of love which we both fought over†. In ‘A Frosty Night’, Robert Graves ends the poem and the mother/daughter conversation with Alice shouting, â€Å"Mother let me go†. Also, in ‘What Has Happened to Lulu† the younger sibling reveals â€Å"I heard someone cry, in anger or in pain†. Perhaps it is not surprising that emotive language is employed after all the poems are borne out of love. Sam Houston had to face many obstacles since he was a little boy. He had very little education; however he educated himself with many readings from his father’s library. Houston served as governor for Tennessee and Texas. He also served as a United States senator for thirteen years. . He befriended General Andrew Jackson and remarried three times. Houston was made the first president of the Republic of Texas in 1836 and was re-elected in 1841. He gave many speeches throughout the years. Houston died on July 26, 1863, in Huntsville, Texas. Sam Houston, fifth child of Samuel Houston and Elizabeth Paxton Houston, was born on March 2, 1793. His father, Samuel Houston, a member of the revolutionary member, went bankrupt in 1806 and had no other option but to sell the Timber Ridge and move west to Tennessee. His father died the same year! A year later, Sam Houston, his mother, and his eight siblings resided south of Knoxville in Maryville, Tennessee. At the age of fourteen, Sam Houston had little education but spent a large amount of time reading books in his late father’s library. He also spent a great amount of time clearing land and developing a farm. The family decided that he would work as a clerk in a store because in his brother’s eyes he wasn’t doing anything worthwhile. Sam showed no interest in this job which resulted in his disappearance from the job and home. He crossed the Tennessee River with the Cherokee Indians. Houston joined a band of approximately three hundred Cherokees led by Chief Oo-loo-te-ka. The chief liked Sam greatly that he soon adopted him and gave him the name â€Å"Colonnen†. Colonnen refers to â€Å"The Raven† which is a symbol of good luck to the Indians. He went into debt due to bringing gifts home to his Indian friends each time he went to visit his family. At the age of nineteen, Houston had to find a way to get out of debt and decided to become a teacher. He charged the students a higher rate than usual which only took six months to pay off his debts. At the beginning it was just a way to make money but he soon realized that he had a strong interest in teaching. The War of 1812 had begun shortly after Houston began teaching. His career ended really soon. â€Å"Euclid soon defeated him and ended whatever thoughts he may have had of a permanent careers as a teacher. Houston was not amongst the early volunteers of the war; however he decided to enroll in a local academy to further his education in math. On March 24, 2013, Sam decided to enlist in the United States Army. Within a few weeks of training he became a sergeant. Nine months later, Sam was promoted to third lieutenant. Early in the 1814, Houston came under command of General Andrew Jackson. He became really good friends with Jackson for approximately thirty years. During the war, Houston was wounded and General Jackson ordered him to stay out the rest of the battle. The Indians refused to surrender. Houston volunteered to lead the attack; however his men hesitated to go forth, Houston ran forward and the Indians ended up shooting him twice in the right shoulder. Jackson ordered the Cherokees to complete the battles which forced the Indians to sign the Treaty of Fort Jackson. This treaty consisted of giving up their claims to more than three-fifths of Alabama. Sam Houston was treated at one of their hospitals in eastern Tennessee and then transported back to Maryville. After the treatment he was assigned to the Southern Division of the United States Army. He was on light duty in the adjutant general’s office. On October 28, 1817 Houston was appointed federal subjacent to the Cherokees. At the age of twenty-five, on March 1, 1818 he resigned from the army and as Indian subagent too. Three months later, Sam Houston returned to Nashville to begin the study of law with Judge James Trimble. It only took Houston six months to learn and pass the bar examination. He then moved to Lebanon and opened a law office. In 1819, Houston was elected attorney general, and he then returned to Nashville. He was very successful and knowledgeable but he was not satisfied with the pay. He resigned in1820 in private practice in Nashville. â€Å"In 1823 he ran for the United States House of Representatives from the ninth Tennessee District. † (pg 15) Houston’s second term ended on March 1827, he went back to Tennessee to run for governor. He put himself in the public’s eyes by attending political rallies and any events that included the voters. â€Å"In early September he defeated Cannon by more than 11,000 votes in a total of more than 75,000 and won the governorship. † (19) In 1824 Sam Houston was introduced to a woman named Eliza Allen. She was only twenty and Sam Houston was thirty-five at the time. He asked her father for his permission to marry his daughter. Her father gave him permission to wed his daughter. She did not love Sam; however her family pretty much pressured her into marrying Houston only because he was a successful man. She followed their command and accepted his proposal in October 1828. They exchanged wedding vows on January 22, 1829 at the Allen’s home. Unfortunately, three months after the marriage his wife left him and went back home to her family. She refused to be with him and on April 16th Houston resigned as governor of Tennessee. It is still unknown why she left Houston, although she was pressured into marrying Houston. Sam and his companion, H.Haralson, journeyed down the Cucumber River to Ohio on April 23, 1829. He ended up in Arkansas with his Cherokee friends. His companion continued to travel leaving Houston behind with his adopted father and friends. Sam Houston soon discovered that the Cherokee nation had to move out of Arkansas and into east-central Oklahoma. The Cherokees were worried that the whites were going to take their current land again. Houston became their advisor and a listener to the Cherokee tribe. â€Å"Houston departed to Washington to inform President Jackson that several Indian agents should be removed and the Treaty of 1828 honored. He traveled to Washington D. C. to inform how the Cherokees received unbroken promises and that they rather have money verses gold. Sam Houston wed another woman, Tiana, while still married to Eliza. It wasn’t a big deal because she was considered Indian and his other wife was Cherokee. Within time he got a weakness for alcohol. It started interfering with his everyday live, was turned down when he campaigned for a position on the Cherokee council, and he also hit his adoptive father. Soon after, his mother fell ill and was rushed back to her home in Tennessee where she died in September 1831. A month later he traveled back to the Cherokee nation. In April he was arrested and punished for striking congressman, Stanbery, with his cane. He was found guilty and received a reprimand. In October 1832, Houston started preparing for his trip to Texas; however his wife refused to go. Houston left her some of his possessions and then divorced her. Sam Houston set up headquarters in San Felipe and began to plan a defensive strategy against the Mexicans. The volunteer soldiers under Stephen Austin battled and successfully took San Antonio, killed Milam, and forcing General Cos to surrender. The soldiers believed that the war was over; however Houston was not convinced that it was over. He made a public announcement that Texas was in need of 5,000 trained men by March 1, 1836. While Houston and the men prepared for the war they were approached by Fannin and the two leaders that won at war in San Antonio. Fannin, Johnson, and Grant came in making promises to the soldiers causing thousands to leave Houston and to join their militia. Sam Houston continued to lead approximately sixty to seventy men. On January 20, Houston traveled to San Felipe to meet with Governor Smith. Houston spent the rest of February with the Cherokees and Indians in the northeast. After arriving at the convention site, Washington-on-the-Brazos, he received news that Santa Anna’s army had attacked Texas and â€Å"besieged† the Alamo and the remaining soldiers. The declaration of independence was adopted on March 2nd. Two days later, Houston had become â€Å"commander in chief of the land forces of the Texian army both Regulars, Volunteers, and Militia, while in actual service. † On March 11th, Houston reached Gonzalez and found 374 volunteers that were led by Edward Burleson. While preparing the men for war Houston received news that Santa Anna’s army had â€Å"taken† the Alamo and attacked and burned all of its defenders. Houston ordered Fannin and his army to retreat to Victoria. They were captured and murdered by the Santa Anna’s army. On April 20th, the battle began between Santa Anna and Houston’s soldiers. Unfortunately, Houston was injured during the battle. Houston’s army men had captured and killed many men causing Santa Anna to offer a peace treaty. Houston refused until both government leaders were present. Fortunately, Houston’s approach succeeded. Sam Houston and Eliza’s divorce was not final until 1837. Houston served as president for two years, December 1836 to December 1838. He was reelected in September 1840. In 1836, a small group of soldiers were attacked by the Mexican General Santa Anna. Houston’s army won the battle against the Mexican forces at San Jacinto and gained independence for Texas, opened up a law office, and promoted a land development after his term expired. He traveled to Mobile, Alabama to interest a wealthy merchant, William Bledsoe, in the Sabine City project. While visiting the Bledsoe estate Houston met Margaret Lea. They were married in Marion, Alabama, on May 9, 1840. They had eight children. Margaret convinced Houston to stop drinking and attend church. Houston continued to work towards annexation with the United States. He used the United States and Great Britain hatred to one another in hopes to make each country want to snatch up Texas so that the other country could not. With high hopes of joining with the United States, the United States still was unwillingly to annex Texas. In 1845, Texas became part of the United States. â€Å"Houston’s joyous moment at the approach of annexation was tempered by the death of Andrew Jackson on June 8, 1845. The family rushed to the Hermitage but arrived a few hours late. They attended the funeral and were guests at the Donelson plantation for several weeks. † (139) Meanwhile, Mexico was at war with Texas for ten years. Houston remained in Washington to work in support of the war. Houston left Washington in the spring of 1847 because his wife had surgery due to breast cancer. â€Å"Houston traded Raven Hill for land within a few miles of Huntsville and planned to build a home for his family. He remained in Texas for the rest of the year, keeping abreast of the war news as General Winfield’s Scott’s army took Mexico City. † (147) In January 1847, Sam Houston obtained a new six year senate term. Houston became a presidential candidate but Houston’s mind and heart was with his family. In 1852, Franklin Pierce was elected; however if Houston put in the effort he could have won. January 15, 1853, he was elected to a new six-year term as Senate. In October 1853, Houston’s family moved to Independence, a city fifty miles to the southwest, while leasing out his home in Huntsville. In 1859, Sam Houston appeared to be leaning toward retirement. Houston invited the public to vote in his favor; however he did not campaign. â€Å"Texans who wanted his leadership had drawn him into the contest, and they did the campaigning. Houston became the only man in the United States to serve as governor of two states. He promised funds for railroads, schools, river improvements, and a protector of Texas if Mexico should try to battle again. Houston was all about the people he served and not the political party. Some petitioned for him to run for president, but he refused to participate in the national convention. When Abraham Lincoln was elected president of the United States, Houston warned Texans that the civil war was going to happen if Lincoln violated the Constitution. The Texas convention removed Houston from office and replaced him with Lieutenant Governor Edward Clark. This resulted because Houston refused to take oath to loyalty to the newly formed Confederate States of America. He wanted to avoid war at all cost and declined Lincoln’s offer to use the federal troops to keep him in office and Texas in the Union. After leaving the Governor’s mansion, he continued to support Texas. Sam Jr. joined the Confederate Army, against his father’s advice, was wounded at the battle of Shiloh. He was reunited with his family but on crutches. Houston moved his family to Huntsville because United States â€Å"took† Galveston and â€Å"destroyed the Houston’s family’s main source of income. † (197) In the winter of 1863, Houston fell ill. He developed an awful cough and was diagnosed with pneumonia. His wife stayed by his side and heard his very last words before his death, â€Å"Texas†¦Texas†¦Margaret. † Texas and his family were very important to Sam Houston. Sam Houston, one of the most important political figures to Texas. Houston served as governor for Tennessee and Texas. He also served as a United States senator for thirteen years. .
